Spicewood Principal Newsletter

Hello Spicewood Families,

It’s been a beautiful week at Spicewood! Our students have been taking full advantage of the perfect fall weather by spending time in our school garden—planting, preparing beds, and learning firsthand about growth and nature. There’s something so special about seeing our Panthers’ excitement as they dig, plant, and watch their hard work come to life!

As we head into a well-deserved three-day weekend, I hope your family enjoys some rest, time outdoors, and moments together. We look forward to welcoming everyone back refreshed and ready for another wonderful week of learning!

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Melanie Solis

IB at Spicewood

This week, all of our of K-5 students had a chance to plant in our Spicewood garden! We are growing carrots, radishes, beets, lettuce, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, dill, fennel, cilantro, wildflowers, and more! Some classes tested the pH levels of our soil, others tested their ability to identify the herbs thriving in our herb bed. Some students learned that all carrots aren’t orange and that it’s best to water the base of our plants - not their leaves! Check out this video to see a little window into our week of planting. :)

UIL Opportunity

Did you know that Spicewood is the reigning UIL Champions for the Westwood Learning Community?

We are looking for interested students to help us defend our title at the UIL meet on January 30th. There are available events for students in grades 2nd-5th. If your child is interested in participating, they must commit to 6 practices and be available if chosen to compete at the meet on January 30th. Practice dates and times will be shared to the group after sign ups.

Students may join up to 2 events as long as the events are not in conflict time slots at the meet. The google form has the event schedule so please make sure you do not sign up for 2 overlapping events.

If your child would like to participate, please fill out this google form by our deadline of October 22nd. This is a hard deadline so our coaches can prepare information for teams to begin practice.

Before signing up, it is important that your child is interested in the selected event and will be a willing participant!

Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon Week: October 27th - October 31st

During RRW students will explore and celebrate making healthy choices for their minds, bodies, and hearts. There will be mini lessons on Broadcast each day with prompts for a short discussion/activity, and students (and staff!) will celebrate healthy living by dressing in a different theme each day.

Red Ribbon Spirit Days:

  • Monday: DREAM of healthy choices! Wear pajamas

  • Tuesday: We are a healthy COMMUNITY! Wear Spicewood spirit wear

  • Wednesday: Being healthy is NO SWEAT! Wear sweats or active wear

  • Thursday: We can be healthy from HEAD to TOE! Wear crazy socks and/or hair/hat

  • Friday: Making healthy choices builds CHARACTER! Dress up as your favorite book character and bring the book if you have it

Dyslexia Awareness Month

Dyslexia is a common learning difference, but is still very misunderstood. Did you know that people with dyslexia have an average to above average IQ? Watch this video to learn about what dyslexia is, signs and symptoms, and myths that surround dyslexia.

This year we are going to celebrate our unique and brilliant students with a Dyslexia Awareness Dash (fun run) on October 30th. Please click this link if you are interested in attending.

APEX Finale!!

We did it Spicewood! We crushed last year's APEX fundraiser with overall school proceeds raised at $52K!! Enjoy this highlight reel from the event. APEX has also shared this fun fact sheet with us, highlighting key stats from our fundraiser.

We’d also love to hear your thoughts on this year’s fundraiser. While we know that fundraising can be challenging, it plays a vital role in supporting our school’s continued success and helping our children learn and grow. We've created a survey to gather feedback on this year's APEX event. We would greatly appreciate your feedback!
